A Quick Guide to Rodents

Rodents are gnawers by nature with only one pair of teeth for their entire lives which never stop growing. Therefore, they whittle their teeth down by chewing on objects to keep the growth of their teeth in check. However, when in homes or offices, they chew on just about anything, including wall studs and electrical wiring. Approximately 20% of unexplained house fires due to short circuits are caused by rodents.

Physical features:
The most common rodents that infest our homes and offices are mice and rats. Rodents are easy to identify. They are usually brown or grey in colour with a pair of long incisors in the front and a tail. The most common rats found in Canada are the house mouse, Norway rats, and roof rats.
Life cycle:
Rodents give birth to young ones just like any other mammals. They produce up to 12 live young ones after about 20 days of gestation period. The newborns reach sexual maturity in about a month or two and start reproducing again.
Habitat:
Rats usually live in attics, burrows, under concrete and porches and in wall voids or other hard to reach places. They like warm temperatures and often stay close to humans where food is easily available.

A Quick Guide to Cockroaches

Things you should know about roaches include:

Physical features:
They are flat-bodies, fast-moving insects, mostly brown in colour.
Life cycle:
A female cockroach can lay between 15 and 40 eggs at a time. They are mostly active at night and hide during the day. The eggs hatch in about 28 days and the formation of the next egg capsule usually begins within 2 weeks. Nymphs become sexually mature in about 40 days and start reproducing.
Feeding habits and habitat:
Cockroaches feed on everything, not just human food or garbage. Cockroaches hide in tight hiding spaces that are warm and humid. Mostly they are found in kitchen cabinets and bathrooms
